THE SMARTKLEAN EFFECT...
A Story of One Interrupted Walk
This beautiful, heart-felt story was written by a Shaman and Representative of SmartKlean in Alaska. Enjoy!
I’d like to share with you, my reader, a story of one interrupted walk; this story will be as short as was my walk. The other day, I was inspired to take a refreshing stroll on my neighborhood street. In anticipation of fresh, clean winter air filling my lungs, I quickly put on a couple layers of clothes and stepped out of the house. I love winter. Frosty freshness of winter air makes me feel joyful and vibrant. It brings memories of my homeland, Siberia, and the thrill of winter games I used to play with my childhood friends. Winter makes me feel like a child again.
I live in the outskirts of Anchorage, on the city’s mountainside. Streets here bathe in a green sea of grand woods and the immeasurable riches of wilderness are just around the corner. For my short, spontaneous walks I don’t have to get in my car. It’s all here, on my neighborhood street: fresh air and beauty. So that day, I stepped outside. Then I cheerfully sped up my driveway and … stopped.
A strong scent of laundry detergent hit my nostrils; a taste of chemicals spread through my tongue. “Oh, no!” I said and covered my nose with a mitten. Up the street I rushed away from the obnoxious smell. It, however, seemed to follow me around. As if my neighbors conspired in spoiling my walk, they all at once ran their laundry.
Giving up on my neighborhood street, I returned to the house. There on a few acres of woods was a trail that stretched from the backdoor and looped through the property. The trail was short and sloping with patches of ice, yet in my yearning for clean winter air, I stepped on and moved carefully – away from the street. In spite of my effort, this change of direction brought me nothing but further distress. I stopped and turned back. I couldn’t believe it: even the woods smelled like laundry.
Domestic air pollution is a common problem for every city. It is as annoying as it is alarming. Through years of my work as an acupuncturist and healer, I have developed an acute sensitivity to the state of my environment. I’ve dealt with episodes of breaking into severe rashes after inhaling air tinged with laundry detergent. After these unpleasant experiences, even the slightest scent of chemicals in the air could put me into a state of alert. I switched to the earth-friendly laundry detergents decades ago, however, even the “greenest” brands are not 100% chemical-free. I’ve always wished for a better solution.
It is a common knowledge that air and water pollution are detrimental to our health. It is especially harmful for children and, on a global scale, for all life on earth. We contribute to the pollution by flushing household chemicals into the ground and then they return back to us with the water we drink, the plants we eat, and with the rain. Drifting from our laundry rooms, chemicals permanently settle in our walls, they pollute air in our houses and even throughout entire neighborhoods. Chemicals are one of the main reasons we get sick.
In the washing process, we engrain chemicals into our clothes and bedding, then absorb them through our skin and our lungs. Gradually we lose our sense of smell and taste, and eventually develop chronic health problems. On my trips to the grocery stores or other public places, I frequently detect traces of chemicals coming from people. It is especially unpleasant to walk through a sickening cloud of chemicals while passing another hiker on nature trail.
For almost three years, from 2010 to 2013, I have traveled the world with my healing work. While I shared my gift and wisdom with people, I emphasized the importance of creating a healthy environment in our homes, public places, and in the world at large. However, I didn’t have the answers to all the questions, for instance; is there a way to wash laundry without detergent or soap? When I worked in Australia in 2011, I used soap balls produced by nature, but it never occurred to me that there could be an innovative approach to the washing process itself.
Upon my return to Anchorage in the summer of 2013, I stayed with a friend who washed his laundry with the most toxic of laundry detergents, Tide. He believed that every product on a shelf, if approved by the FDA, was safe for customers. He was also convinced that Tide was “the best brand of all”. The strong scent of Tide in the air made me suffer tremendously. To bring awareness to my friend about the adverse effects of regular laundry detergents, I searched online for some information. At one point, I came across SmartKlean Laundry Washing Balls. I was delighted to learn about an unconventional approach to the washing process that made the laundry washing balls 100% chemical-free.
In the process of ordering the product, I realized that there weren’t any distributors in Alaska, “Would you like to become one?” the site asked. This could be my opportunity to move from words to action, I thought. However, I had no experience in sales—I actually was never good at selling anything—and between my acupuncture practice, classes, and writing a book, I would not have any time for the onsite business. Nevertheless, my passionate wish for a chemical-free world outweighed the logic. I decided to become a distributor of SmartKlean Laundry Washing Balls.
If we choose to live in a clean-air, clean-land environment, we have to start at our doorsteps. Doing something even as small as eliminating all chemicals from our homes could start a global movement. A steady drop in a bucket fills it to the top. One day new signs might appear in our cities: “Chemical-Free Household” and “Chemical-Free Neighborhood”. This could be your house and your neighborhood. This could be how sharing my story of one interrupted walk, might turn into a movement of thousands. They will be walking without disturbance through chemical-free neighborhoods, across a chemical-free planet.

How to Identify a Low Quality or Knock Off Laundry Ball
How to Identify a Low Quality or Knock Off Laundry Ball
Priced at less than $20.00
The raw minerals in the ceramics and a durable non-toxic enclosure are not cheap, so if a laundry ball retails at less than $20.00 USD, chances are it’s an imitation. We have found that many cheap laundry balls are mixed with chemicals (see Added Fragrances below) to reduce the cost of the raw materials in the active ceramics and increase profits. The vast majority of these laundry balls are sold on Amazon and eBay.
Limited Information
The website only provides a picture and small paragraph about the product, but no information on the amount or types of ceramics, their active ingredients, functions or any picture of the ceramics. If the seller cannot provide the ingredients or MSDS, either they know nothing about the technical specifications of the product or are deliberately hiding the ingredients used.
Added Fragrances
The fact that some of these imitation laundry balls come with a ‘fragrance’ such as lemon, is a clear indication that there are added chemicals on the ceramics. Many of these fake laundry balls are sold on Amazon, therefore limited information is available to the customer about its active ingredients.
There are less than 2 types of ceramics
These are often the worst knock-offs and contain inactive / inert ceramics.

Tests and Honest Reviews from the Public and Organizations....
EcoSalon “All of our clothes came out completely clean. They even felt lighter and fluffier than with a normal detergent. They smelled fresh and not in a detergent kind of way like the clothes were being scented. No, they actually smelled fresh. We also put the Laundry Ball to the ultimate test: dirty diapers (with a stain pretreatment). Clean as a baby’s bottom---you know, after.”
Organic Authority “I was a skeptic at first, but our clothes smell fresh, feel clean and light, especially delicate garments. You just can’t beat a laundry product that’s as good for the planet or safe and economical for your family than the Laundry Ball.”
NBC’s Today Show “ This thing blows my mind! I tried it out with my t-shirts, this thing is amazing!” - Steve Greenberg

Saves loads upon loads of energy !
Skipping the rinse cycle not only conserves water, it conserves energy as well. In addition, the laundry ball effectively washes all fabrics in cold water. Since a whopping 90% of the electricity used by washing machines often goes to just heat the water, the laundry ball can save a significant amount of energy throughout its lifespan. www.smartkleanlife.com / EATWELL CONSULTING / SMARTKLEAN LIFE wishes everyone a SAFE and HAPPY Memorial Day !

SMART KLEAN FACT !
One SmartKlean Ball can save 6,000-8,000 gallons of water!
Without any suds or soapy residues, there’s nothing to rinse out, therefore you can skip -or- start from the rinse cycle. Most washing machines use 10-20 gallons per rinse cycle, therefore, depending on your washing machine, one laundry ball can save:
• 6,000-8,000 gallons of water with a Traditional Top Loader
• 2,400-6,000 gallons of water with a High Efficiency (HE) Front Loader

SMARTKLEAN FACT !
One SmartKlean Ball is equivalent to 20-40 containers of laundry products.
SmartKlean replaces laundry detergent, fabric softener and dryer sheets. Although some of the packaging for these products are said to be recyclable, the sad reality is that they are ‘down-cycled’ and more often sent straight to landfill. According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition, 93% of plastics are not put into recycling bins. In addition, their manufacturing processes are often toxic and consume large amounts of resources. The clear advantage of our laundry ball is that it is extremely reusable. Its recyclable enclosure consumes much less energy to be produced and once it is recycled, it can easily be reused and molded without losing much quality. Its strong, durable material is free of BPA and PVC. www.smartkleanlife.com

Static Cling? Don’t waste your money on icky, toxic dryer sheets! Here are 3 natural solutions....
1. Damp Rag: Put a damp rag into the dryer at the end of the dryer cycle.
2. Safety Pins: Seriously, we had never heard of this before, but we gave it a shot, and it worked REALLY well. Just pin two safety pins on two different items in the dryer and everything comes out static free!
3. Vinegar: Just pour about 1/4 cup of white vinegar into the fabric softener dispenser on your washing machine. You should have no need for a dryer sheet — and NO, you can’t smell the vinegar.
What works the best? Hands down, the best solution {in our opinion} is combining the vinegar and the safety pins. Plus, it’s eco-friendly — and practically free!
Extra Tips
Another thing we learned is washing your clothing less frequently also helps to reduce static cling. The winter tends to increase static in clothing. Fleece jackets, polyester pants, and nylons are most prone to static cling. For whatever reason synthetic materials are more susceptible to static than natural fabrics like cotton.
So, if you can, try to wash your natural fabrics separately. When washing your clothes made of synthetic materials try pulling the clothes out of the dryer while they are still a little damp to prevent them from over-drying, after all, dry conditions are a breeding ground for static, so moisture would be the obvious antidote. www.smartkleanlife.com

BEWARE OF THE "BOOTLEG" IMITATIONS
Exaggerated claims of washing 1000 loads
After testing several laundry balls sold on Amazon, we found that most wash with the same potency up to the 50-60th load. Then after this short period, the clothes were slightly odorous or were not fully clean. This is because these imitations often contain added surfactants (a substance used in detergent), and even harmful SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) which can dissolve and wear out the ceramics quickly. The remaining minerals on the ceramics may continue to clean but not as powerfully as the first several uses. SmartKlean® does not contain any surfactants or SLS. www.smartkleanlife.com

DID YOU KNOW ?
DID YOU KNOW ?
2% of a garment’s weight comes from laundry detergent residue.
Nothing is closer to our bodies than our clothing. We wear fabrics all day and sleep in them at night. Regular laundry detergents leave residues in your clothes and linens after every wash. It’s easy to verify this by smelling them. Smell detergent? That’s not mountain spring you’re smelling in your laundry, it’s a concoction of different chemicals. Your skin is like a sponge and it constantly absorbs these harmful chemicals into your bloodstream. www.smartkleanlife.com

SmartKlean® is composed of high-quality, hard to find mineral ceramics and a strong, eco-friendly enclosure. Our product has received excellent independent reviews from well-respected publications and websites. The outstanding quality of our laundry ball is the result of a long product development experience and of our constant will to improve it in order to satisfy our clients’ expectations.
Imitiation SmartKlean Balls
As it is the case for most products of high quality sold under well-known brands, SmartKlean’s laundry balls are now being counterfeited on Amazon.com. The imitation SmartKlean Laundry Balls can be very harmful in the trust relationship we have with our customers.
In fact, the packaging looks almost identical to ours, but the laundry ball is of very poor quality and does not meet any of our quality and selection standards. The imitation SmartKlean ball uses a shiny and flimsy plastic enclosure with no blue logo seal. The authentic SmartKlean Laundry Ball uses an enclosure that feels more like rubber than plastic. www.smartkleanlife.com

HOW IS DIRT REMOVED FROM YOUR CLOTHING ?
Do you ever wonder how laundry detergent is capable of removing dirt from your clothes? The answer is simple. Detergent helps the water clean.
Through a chemical process, detergent makes surfaces more susceptible to water and increases its pH levels, making it easier for the water to remove the dirt from the fabrics. The downside is that most of the chemical ingredients used to achieve this are toxic to your health and the environment.*
The SmartKlean Laundry Ball uses an innovative technology designed to clean fabrics through a physical process instead. On a molecular level, the water is entirely affected by its special mineral ceramics, offering a natural and powerful wash. www.smartkleanlife.com
